About this course

Power BI takes the modelling skills from Power Query and Power Pivot and adds distribution: reports that live online, refresh on a schedule, and can be opened on a phone in a meeting. This course follows one dataset end to end, from messy source files to a published report with row-level security.

Module 1 — The Power BI landscape

Desktop, Service, workspaces, datasets, reports and dashboards — what each one actually is.

Module 2 — Getting and shaping data

Power Query inside Power BI, incremental thinking, and connecting to common business sources.

Module 3 — Modelling for reporting

Star schema again, relationships, hierarchies, and the model view as documentation.

Module 4 — DAX for reports

Measures for revenue, margin, growth and share. Variables, and formatting measures properly.

Module 5 — Visual design

Choosing charts honestly, layout and alignment, colour with meaning, and the visuals to avoid.

Module 6 — Interaction

Slicers, sync slicers, drill-through pages, bookmarks, tooltips and buttons.

Module 7 — Publishing and sharing

Workspaces, apps, scheduled refresh, gateways in outline, and version control habits.

Module 8 — Security and performance

Row-level security roles, testing as a user, Performance Analyzer, and common causes of slow reports.

Requirements

  • A computer with Microsoft Excel installed. Microsoft 365 is recommended; where a feature is version-dependent, the lesson states this and shows the alternative approach.
  • Power BI Desktop, a free download from Microsoft for Windows. A Power BI Service account is useful for the publishing module but not required to follow it.
  • No software is provided with this course. Learners must hold their own licence for any Microsoft product used.
  • Roughly 9 hours of study time, which you can spread over as long as you like — access does not expire.
